With a passion for youth development, Sara Torpey brings over 18 years of counselling experience to her practice. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in School Counselling, solidifying her expertise in supporting adolescents, their families and young adults through life’s challenges.
Sara has been working as a School Counsellor in the Northern Rivers since 2019. This experience has honed her unique ability to connect with adolescents and inspired her to expand her support beyond the scope of the school environment through private practice.
Before her counselling roles at Living School (Lismore) and Byron Community Primary School (Byron Bay), Sara’s professional experience encompassed a wide range of counselling settings. This includes individual and group counselling for teens and adults, inpatient psychiatric care for adolescents, addictions counselling, case management, rehabilitation counselling and mental health advocacy in court. This diverse background equips Sara with a deep understanding of human behaviour and the various challenges individuals can face.
Now, Sara focuses on creating a supportive, judgment-free and trauma-informed practice for adolescents and young adults. Sara understands the complexities of growing up and is able to hold space for youth as they navigate the ups and downs of this transformative period. Sara believes her clients have the capacity for growth and positive change; supporting them in discovering their inner strengths and resources.
Sara uses a person-centred approach, focusing on the needs of both the individual and the family unit. Her personalised approach includes elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, Psycho-education and Motivational Interviewing. She help clients develop healthy coping mechanisms, navigate emotional challenges and build self-esteem. For parents, Sara offers guidance for healthier communication, co-regulation strategies, fostering trust and setting healthy boundaries. Ultimately, her goal is to help families rebuild strong connections and navigate this period of change together.
